'True Detective' Emmys Loss: Why the TV Academy Got It Wrong (and HBO Had ...

Even though it should have, "True Detective" didn't win the top prize at the 66th Annual Primetime Emmys. Should HBO have submitted it as a miniseries? Absolutely not.

If time is indeed a flat circle, then we will all be trapped in a world where Rust Cohle, Marty Hart and the revolutionary first season of "True Detective" never won the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy award. We will be forced to face the loss again and again for the rest of our miserable, mistaken days on this Earth. That is the reality we're facing today, as a new day dawns but the dark is most definitely winning.

Fans of "True Detective" undoubtedly already know this: The Television Academy got it wrong Monday night when they awarded their top honor to a show that's already won. Not only that, but "Breaking Bad" had already been honored for its final season, even before the 2014 ceremony began -- it won the year prior for the first half of its last "season." "True Detective" doesn't have the luxury of a do-over. They can't be honored down the line to make up for a missed opportunity when it really counted. As a self-contained story, Season 1 will live forever as a stand alone entity.

So is that how HBO should have sold it? A stand-alone entity?Much was made over network president Michael Lombardo's decision to run "True Detective" in the drama series categories rather than as a miniseries, for which it qualified and could have easily swept ("Fargo" would have had no chance in hell next to its superior competition). The premium cable network has always coveted gold, too, making no secret of their mission to clean up at award shows in order to solidify and expand their subscription base.

This also begs the question, "What gold is most valuable?" HBO could add to their war chest of trophies with big wins in the miniseries categories, but they'd arguably get more exposure just for competing against the big boys in the series department. Putting your name up against "Breaking Bad" and "House of Cards" is obviously better from a marketing standpoint than getting bumped down next to "Bonnie & Clyde" and "The White Queen" (and even "Fargo" and "Treme").

'True Detective'

No, HBO didn't make a mistake. Even with the loss in Drama Series, look what they were able to accomplish without even nabbing a win in the major categories. Last year, Bryan Cranston was the odds-on favorite to win Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series. His competition was rather weak (it was Kevin Spacey's first year for "House of Cards" and Jon Hamm was coming off perhaps "Mad Men's" least respected season). Yet, when a name was announced, it wasn't for the "Breaking Bad" star -- he lost to Jeff Daniels of "The Newsroom," a showwithout a vocal and passionate fan base thatmany critics openly revile.

Why? Daniels deserves much of the credit for turning in a performance both flamboyantly grand and carefully nuanced, but one could argue the Emmys were waiting to reward Cranston for his last eligible year on the show. After all, they had no idea McConaughmania was about to set in, and it would've been tough to imagine any show competing with the last eight episodes of AMC's most thrilling drama. Voters undoubtedly still found Cranston deserving, as he managed to out duel the recent Oscar winner for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series.

But it was Matthew McConaughey and "True Detective" who still won -- in spirit, at least. HBO capitalized on the McConaughsance so much many (including yours truly) listed him as the odds on favorite to win at the Emmys. "Breaking Bad" be damned. It was Rust Cohle's year. Even though this turned out to be false, the attention given to "True Detective" competing in the top tier categories was far greater than had it run as a miniseries. It helped push rampant speculation about Season 2 and drive viewers to watch Season 1 on DVD and Blu-ray (released mid-Emmys campaign in early June). The way Rust and Marty dominated conversation was unprecedented for a freshman series. HBO played its strengths (McConaughey) and weaknesses (plagiarism issues) so well, it almost doesn't matter that they couldn't bring home the gold.

While McConaughey wasn't the only reason to get caught up in the "True Detective" craze, his strong contention -- as well as Cary Fukunaga's win for Outstanding Directing -- offered a modicum of tribute to the series we'll never see again; at least, not the same way or with the same impact. Miniseries are on the rise. Actors of higher and higher regard flock to the small screen. Both of these trends existed before "True Detective" hit, but both have also been forever altered since it aired. Actors like it, every network is looking for a show like it and buzz like it was quickly and effortlessly generated.

But they may have a hard time finding it. "True Detective" Season 1 felt like lightning in a bottle, making the wait for Season 2 unbearable and likely to end in disappointment. What Nic Pizzolatto, Cary Fukanaga, and the entire cast and crew created in their first go-round with the police drama genre was truly special.While Emmy has chosen another as the most outstanding series of last season, "True Detective" and its fans will have to be satisfied with knowing they brought the fight to a series that's proven itself untouchable.

Taylor Swift, the trembling alto voice of a generation, and her ex-lover John Mayer, bedroom-eyed soft rock casanova, may be getting back together. They were both spotted leaving the Chateau Marmont last night, where TMZ says they had supper together.

But The Cut alerts us to an E! news report that Swifts rep denies the dinner happened. They were both at the Chateau last night, yes, as every celebrity is always at the Chateau last night, but they didnt speak or even see each other. So what the hell is going on here? Are they ever, ever getting back together? (Get it? Like the song?) I dont know. I dont see how it would be possible.

I mean, they both wrote songs about each other. Thats pretty final in the world of music. Just ask Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. (Actually dont ask them.) Swift, of course, wrote the soaring self-help kiss-off Dear John in which she chastised a man named John for messing with an innocent girl. The song reaches its climax as Swift sings, Im shining like fireworks / Over your sad empty town, an obvious reference to the brief period in 2009 when Swift became a being of pure glowing energy and hovered above Fairfield, Connecticut, for seven nights. Its a pretty effective song.

So effective, in fact, that Mayer spoke out about feeling burned by the song. He was burned enough that, several years later, he issued something of a response, the song Paper Doll, which makes reference to an old love who is 22 girls in one, perhaps a reference to Swifts wild n out anthem 22. We dont know for certain that Paper Doll is about Swift, but it certainly seems like it is.

I found the menus rather easy to navigate and it didn't take too much digging to get to key features that call for adjusting. I love the fact that I can place a water bottle, press an auto fill and walk away. The screen will even display the amount of water dispensed into a container in ml, oz. or cups. There is also a precise fill feature that will consent to you excellent an exact amount of water to be dispensed. This is a great feature for baking/recipes!After the refrigerator was installed, I enabled the turbo cool for both the refrigerator and the freezer. Our draftsman purchased Frigidaire products for our staffroom/kitchen at work. The Qualified 19 Cu. Ft All refrigerator and the freezer to match. One time and 4 weeks with our hold, the compressor broke and it look into 85* in the refrigerator. Everything in there had to be thrown dead. In view of the fact with the intention of the draftsman with the intention of bought the products didn't hold the extended warranty, I called Frigidaire to reflect it over what I could possibly do. I am so shocked with the intention of a fridge this high-priced didn't last longer. I would recommend passing on this one.

I bought this model at Best Buy in May, 2011. I was given a one week shipping window 3-4 weeks later, June 14 - 21. I don't know the exact date that it was delivered and neither did Frigidaire or Best Buy. It quit cooling June 21, 2012 at 9:00 in the sundown. I waited to call until the next day. The only apparatus renovate place that the automated Frigidaire logic had for my zip code never returned my two calls. I left post on their answering apparatus for two consecutive days. I tried another town's zip code and was able to get a name out to take a look at it two days later. He said that it probably had had a slow leak since it was manufactured. He also said that it would be hard to find the hole since it was such a slow leak. He recommended that I call another renovate companionship that was good with this type of conundrum. I called and a woman took down my information and said that she would give me a call back in a couple of hours. I never received a call, so the next day I called Frigidaire, again release-minded to talk to a human. After being on hold for a very long time, I was able to speak to a name. When I gave her the fine points, she told me that the refrigerator wasn't under warranty since I had waited to call until the later day. If I had called the night previous to it would have been under warranty. I asked to talk to her superintendent. After a long wait, she came back on the line and said that her manager had unbendable to pay for the parts. I was told that parts were ordinarily 75% of the renovate bill. When I called the renovate shop back, that was by all accounts good with this type of conundrum, I was told the bill for labor would be $850-1500. She suggested that I must just throw it away and buy a new one. One day out of the one year manufacturers warranty! No one would have been there if I had called that night! Shame on Frigidaire!

I purchased this model from the AJ Madison web site not amazon and I am completely pleased. There was no shipping charges disparate amazon wanted a modest $200 for shipping. I expected my fridge in 2 days and couldn't be happier including it. The amount of storage on this thing is awe-inspiring and it looks extremely water supply made and quiet for what I paid for it.I placed it on tile and the total fridge would move as i opened the lobby but as you fill it including lots of beer it solves the problem. They do not offer any doable way to get service and NO PARTS will be shipped even under warranty...SUBPAR customer service, sent a new one and I had to take apart it out of the pen from China. Now this unit has both broken top drawers... What company operates like this? Building a client take apart out of a pen that came overseas when the unit came from their warehouse in the US? Visibly Vinotemp cannot get their oversears manufacture right in China...do not buy this product if you care about quality, reliability and service. NO VALUE!The product looks good but is so poorly constructed and the service is no damning that i fervently urge vacant to a foremost machine strain where they build best harvest and stand in the rear the quality and warranty. The new feeler looks identical to the initially one, so it may be that LG is accepting these failure-prone sensors without changing/upgrading etc. LG seemed to have no problem with emergency feeler availability. That would deprivation me 1 feeler a year, or a reduced amount of if one is unlucky, as it's only guaranteed for 3 months. Maybe unattractively scour the net for a emergency thermo-whatever, (the tech didn't know the name of the element), and at that calculate fit it myself. I will never buy an LG fridge over again. May 19, 2014Had I on paper this assess after we owned it for 1 year, I would have given it a 5 star rating. Even if after owning it for 4 years now I would have to give it a 1. In 4 years we have had to have this fridge repaired 4 times, the parts on it are flimsy, there are many small fake parts that have kaput off with just light everyday use. the door never actually clogged by the book and it just keeps contravention down. The fan in the freezer the feeds the ice apparatus is everlastingly getting full of ice which makes the fridge noisey and there have also been harms with the wires that connect the reins in the door. When you open and close the door those wires eventually break and to renovate them is a nightmare. Years ago we used to buy a fridge or a freezer for that matter and they worked for 20 or 30 years lacking ever contravention down. When we bought this house we got the old freezer that’s been in succession non stop for 40 years it probably uses a lot of electricity but it sure is dependable. I would have to give this fridge a big fat 0 when it comes to reliability

My LG 4 door door refrig has failed double now (with at the start year). Sure the exterior point is really sweet, and the shelving well planning out, but the interior piping for fill up is really cheap plastic that has failed TWICE now in different locations. The type of piping for the application is not passable... LG used this type of cheap piping to save money. The failure flooded my kitchen both era. And to top it off, LG service and support is very, very poor to boot. Call backs promised but never received. Parts promised but never received.At the same time I bought the LG refrigerator, I also bought their top of line dishwasher... It too has a serious engineering flaw that caused the counter weight logic on the door to fail. Now the door, when opened, drops to the stump like a lead balloon... I took the apparatus away from each additional and discovered the pully logic for the door uses string! Wow I could not judge it! Of course the problem was caused by the string contravention. Bolt from the blue! I call it extremely cheap engineering (hidden of course so you can't see it....).With researching, apparently I am not the only one to experience these tribulations.I will absolutely avoid all LG appliances. I am deeply disappointed with both my LG appliances.I will never ever buy LG appliances again with my experience with LG....

I have had to exchange this tank 2 times now, it always starts leaking on the joint where the tank is seamed. Than everytime I get fill up out it squirts fill up into the fridge and eventually runs out on the floor. This time I decided to just cut it out completely and use this hose to loop almost. I also purchased 2 GE fill up line connectors (REFRIGERATOR WATER LINE CONNECTOR WR02X11330 to connect existing tubing to this tube, I looped it almost a few times in the back of the fridge, and it now works great. I may not have as much stored chilled fill up capacity, but hopefully this will last me a few being and it will be value not needing to exchange the tank again.

I just saved a ton of cash doing this impact hinge myself. The door was so light it popped right off including two screws. The door opens now including total ease. They suggested to remove everything from fridge and power down but I did not. I just had all prepped including all my tools, grease and flat ladder including a thick soft comforter placed on it so it would not scrape the door. It look less that 2 minutes to pull off hinge and remove old hinge and grease and replace including new one. Believe me it was easy!!!!These guys ship this thing fast also including great packing.
